Since no one was going to argue with the governor of the Northwest territory, Losanteville became Cincinnati. On an inspection tour, the governor of the Northwest Territory announced that he hated the name Losanteville, and instead was going to name it after a favorite Revolutionary War officers' club called the Society of Cincinnatus. During the next year, 1789, Fort Washington was built within the settlement. The founding fathers named it Losanteville. The land was broad and flat, the hills surrounding it were not too rugged, and its position on the Ohio, directly between the Great Miami and the Little Miami Rivers, made it a natural for the control of river traffic and commerce.
